Blythedale Children’s Hospital Appoints Dr. Nathaniel Beers as Next CEO

After a comprehensive national search, Blythedale Children’s Hospital has announced the appointment of Nathaniel Beers, MD, MPA, FAAP, as its next President and Chief Executive Officer. Dr. Beers, a nationally recognized pediatrician and health care executive with deep expertise in caring for children with complex medical needs, will assume the role on November 17, 2025. He succeeds current President and CEO, Larry Levine, who will retire at the end of 2025 after 26 years of transformative leadership at Blythedale.

Dr. Beers currently serves as Executive Vice President of Community and Population Health at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C. A developmental-behavioral pediatrician, he has held multiple leadership roles across health, education, and social service sectors, including President of the HSC Health Care System, COO and Chief of Specialized Instruction for the D.C. Public Schools, and senior positions within the D.C. Department of Health.

“Nathaniel Beers is an exceptional leader whose career has been dedicated to improving systems of care for medically complex children and their families,” said Peter D. Rittmaster, Board Chair of Blythedale Children’s Hospital and co-chair of the Board Search Committee. “He brings an important blend of clinical expertise, executive experience, and public policy acumen to Blythedale. We are confident that under his leadership, the Hospital will continue to innovate and expand its role as a national leader in specialized pediatric care,” said Scott R. Levy, Former Board Chair of Blythedale Children’s Hospital and co-chair of the Board Search Committee.

Dr. Beers currently serves on the International Medical Advisory Group for Special Olympics International and sits on the board of Parents Amplifying Voices in Education. His focus throughout has been improving outcomes for children with disabilities and ensuring families receive coordinated, compassionate care.

“It’s an extraordinary honor to join an institution as respected and innovative as Blythedale,” said Dr. Beers.

“Throughout my career, I’ve worked to break down the barriers that make life harder for families caring for children with complex needs. I’m excited to build on the strong foundation here and help chart the path forward—one that prioritizes not just excellent clinical care, but also partnership, equity, and empowerment for every family we serve. I’m honored to accept the baton from Larry Levine, whose remarkable leadership and advocacy over the past decades have shaped Blythedale into the extraordinary place it is today.”

Dr. Beers earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Rochester, his medical degree from The George Washington University, and completed residency at Children’s National. He also holds a Master of Public Administration from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and completed a child advocacy fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Beers will succeed Levine, who announced his plans to retire last year. Under his leadership, the Hospital evolved from a pediatric rehabilitation center into a nationally recognized specialty children’s hospital, serving hundreds of medically complex children each year.

“Dr. Beers has dedicated his entire career to medically fragile children,” said Levine. “I'm thrilled that his extensive experience will help Blythedale continue to be a leader in providing the highest quality of care to the region's most vulnerable population of children. He has the profound understanding of their unique medical and social needs to establish new programs which will improve their health and quality of life.”

“We are deeply grateful for Larry’s visionary leadership, tireless advocacy on behalf of our patients and families, and unwavering commitment to our mission,” said Rittmaster. "Because of his direction and strong financial stewardship, Blythedale is well-positioned for continued growth and innovation under Dr. Beers’ direction.”
