Here at Blythedale we understand the importance of reading... and reading often! What better way to ensure this is happening than by providing our patients and their families with an opportunity to build their libraries and the Hospital's as well.

Blythedale Bookworms launched in 2019 through the Child Life and Creative Arts Therapy program in an effort to encourage bedside reading during hospitalization and to build the libraries of our patients and families.  Through an initial series of ‘Book Tours’ our Child Life and Creative Arts team hand-picked titles that targeted various languages, ages and therapeutic content.  Books were given out at the bedside for families to enjoy together and keep, in hopes these resources and enjoyment for reading will follow them home.

Through our Blythedale Bookworm initiative, we have successfully placed developmentally appropriate books in the hands of more than 200 children since the initiative began in 2019.

This month, Blythedale Bookworms continued its partner ship with the Hospital's Diversity and Inclusion Task Force, a group dedicated to promoting both awareness of and sensitivity to the differences in people to ensure a positive and supportive environment for all. Together we are teaming up to promote literacy by getting more books into the hands and homes of the children we serve. The initiative features titles with diverse protagonists as our developing readers benefit both from seeing ‘mirrors’ of themselves as well as from learning about differences. Tune in and Enjoy!

Book Tours – Fun and festive book tours happen throughout the year where all patients and families receive a book specially curated by our very own Bookworms!

3 Book tours and counting!

Martin Luther King Jr. Book Drop
- Brad Meltzer’s ‘I am Martin Luther King, Jr.’ was purchased for our FIRST Bookworm and Diversity and Inclusion Task Force Book Drop - putting this resource directly in the hands of our Blythedale Team members to use in therapy and school.
