Today, Blythedale Children’s Hospital proudly celebrated the ribbon-cutting of The Stavros Niarchos Center for Speech & Audiology. Joined by representatives of the Foundation, local officials, Blythedale Board members, staff and patient families, the new 6,000 square foot, state-of-the-art Center was opened for tours. This new child and family friendly environment features:
- 15 offices/treatment rooms;
- 9 thematic treatment rooms (including Feeding, Symbolic Play, Arts and Crafts);
- State-of-the-art technology (including My Tobii eye-gaze technology, a Visi-pitch instrumentation device, ceiling-mount cameras to enable therapy session viewing via iPad from alternate locations, wall-mounted, height-adjustable computers in treatment rooms, vented storage for assistive technology, and iPad docking station to accommodate 24 devices); and
- Dedicated Assistive Technology rooms for Speech and Occupational Therapy.
This new Center enhances the Hospital’s dynamic and comprehensive inpatient and outpatient speech, hearing and language services for children and families in the New York metropolitan area.
"What we see here today is that the state-of-the-art speech and audiology facilities now match the exceptional staff that provides those services,” said Blythedale Board Chair Owen Gutfreund. "And this great moment has been made possible by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.”
Mr. Gutfreund was joined at the podium this morning by Blythedale President and CEO Larry Levine, Foundation Chief Operating Officer Vasili Tsamis, Westchester County Deputy Executive Kevin J. Plunkett, and Stephanie Halpin, the parent of a patient. New York State Senator Andrea Stewart Cousins was also on hand for the festivities.
During the ceremony, Larry Levine thanked the many people involved in seeing the enormous project from concept to completion, including the dedicated Speech and Occupational Therapy departments.
"Our therapists do amazing work,” said Mr. Levine, at this morning’s ceremony. "They combine their enormous clinical skills with the utmost compassion, making sure that each child’s unique needs are met. We are very proud to be able to provide these comprehensive services to the greater metropolitan region, in this extraordinary new facility.”
