Blythedale Children's Hospital: Blythedale Students Win Prestigious Chase Science Award

Blythedale Students Win Prestigious Chase Science Award

Blythedale One of Ten Tri-State Area Schools
Recognized for Innovative Educational Leaps

VALHALLA, NY (March 2010) -- A group of talented and hard working teens from the Mt. Pleasant-Blythedale UFSD were recently presented with a 2010 Chase “Multimedia in the Classroom” Award. The forward-thinking teens developed a website to highlight their research on the Bronx River: Past, Present, and Future. The contest challenged the students to transform their learning environment through technology.

In recognition of the technological leaps taken in local classrooms to enhance learning, ten tri-state area schools, including Blythedale, were honored as winners last week at the Celebration of Teaching & Learning, a premier professional development conference for educators hosted by THIRTEEN & WLIW21. There, students and teachers from the winning schools received special recognition and a $1,000 cash prize from Chase, founding sponsor of the Celebration.

For Blythedale’s team, the victory was especially sweet. Up against 450 competitors, the team was the only winner from Westchester County.

“This is simply an extraordinary achievement for our students and teachers,” said Mt. Pleasant-Blythedale UFSD Superintendent Ellen Bergman. “Our school strives to provide equity and equal access to all students, and this award exemplifies our belief that when students are given opportunities and access to learning, a disability is not a barrier to achievement. Our students, who face such monumental challenges, were able to compete on a level playing field and rise above to win.”

The Chase Multimedia in the Classroom Awards highlight the achievements of individuals using innovative techniques to enhance the K-12 curriculum. Winning submissions utilized various platforms of multimedia, demonstrating how students and teachers alike are using technology to transform and improve the classroom experience.

At Blythedale, students and teachers collaborated and utilized multimedia platforms currently available only as Beta, or test, versions. “It wouldn’t even be accurate to call their work ‘state-of-the-art’ because people aren’t even using it yet,” said Bergman. “This was exemplary practice of teamwork. As one of the teachers said, ‘If one person on the team had not contributed, this project wouldn’t have worked.”

“This year we saw a record number of submissions for this competition, proving to us that not only are advances in technology inevitable but they are a welcomed necessity in the classroom,” said Kimberly Davis, president of the JPMorgan Chase Foundation. “This is why Chase believes it is so important to recognize those who are fostering these advances. We are celebrating the future of innovation through our students and teachers who truly understand how to use these tools to their full educational potential.”
